LEAD TRAINER: MARK UMBREIT
The process of mediating a dialogue between certain crime victims and offenders (often with the involvement of family members), primarily in cases involving property offenses and minor assaults, is offered in thousands of cases in nearly 300 programs throughout the United States. With the growing national interest in Restorative Justice, an even larger number of communities are likely to initiate the process. With close links to the early development of Restorative Justice theory, victim offender mediation can provide victims with the opportunity to become actively involved in the process of holding the offender accountable. They can learn more about what happened, express their concerns to the offender, and help develop a plan with the offender to make amends. Offenders can learn the real human impact of their behavior; take direct responsibility for making things right, and help restore victim losses. Participants will learn the skills necessary to conduct mediation sessions.
An introduction to larger group conferencing and the relationship of victim offender mediation to family group conferencing and peacemaking circles will also be presented. An emphasis will be made on using a multi-method approach that is adapted to the specific needs of the individual parties and their culture.
